Centre County, PA: Index to the CCGS Cemetery Series

The Centre County Genealogical Society is pleased to offer you this Index to the Cemetery Series. Over the past 21 years, we have been reading and recording the cemeteries of Centre County, Pennsylvania and in 2010 we completed the 18th and final book in this series.

Producing this index was an interesting challenge, as computer software has changed dramatically during the years since our first book. If you own an early edition of one of our earliest cemetery books, the pagination may have changed slightly when it was converted to pdf format for the printer, so if a problem arises please recheck the index of the book in hand for the correct page. No additions or corrections have been added to the text of the original publications. For example, if a book was originally published in 1995, the data is current only to about 1994. We hope that translation from the original indices and older software has not created errors.

This index is meant to be used as an adjunct to the books. You will need the actual book to retrieve any information on the tombstone and any information about who is buried nearby. Sometimes perusing who is buried nearby helps in finding that elusive maiden name, because your GGGrandmother may be buried BESIDE her parents, as well as with her spouse! As a searchable CD, we believe this will add innumerable benefits. You can search for a variety of spellings, possible maiden names, or an unusual given name. We have sorted all of the 18 books into one index, so that you may more likely find someone who is not buried in the same township as the rest of his family. A key has been added at the end of each line to indicate which book in the series you should be perusing further. For example, an Albert Confer can be found in BS (Benner-Spring) and also in CU (Curtin-Howard).

Be certain to look for a spelling variations. The spelling on the stone may not be the way you believe it to be, but the way the stonecarver or the person who gave the information understood it. Sometimes even the first letter is different, so try leaving that off to see if another possibility emerges.

Due to their locations adjacent to municipal lines, a few cemeteries have been included in more than one book, thus you may find your ancestor listed in multiple books. May thanks Judith W. Heald for compiling this index.
