Scotia – Lost in History
7:00 p.m.
Foxdale Village Auditorium
500 E. Marylyn Avenue, State College

The Scotia area was a significant part of the iron industry history of Centre County spanning from the early 1800’s through to the 1940’s. Scotia, itself, operated for 30 years beginning in 1880 with 250 workers removing countless tons of iron ore using the latest technology of that era. Scotia was a community as well – company housing, stores, post office, and railroad station. Today it’s all but gone. Presenter Bob Hazelton is part of a group currently researching Scotia and trying to keep its history alive. Relive the history of Scotia in a joint program with the Centre County Historical and the Genealogical Societies.

Other Events

Karen Harvey is assisting a visiting scholar from the Ulster-Scots Institute in Derry, Northern Ireland, who wishes to meet with and record groups and individuals who express their ethnic identity as Scotch-Irish.  The Scotch-Irish, also known as Ulster Scots, are defined as the descendants of Scottish families who settled in Northern Ireland, primarily in the province of Ulster, in the 16th and 17th centuries; these Protestant, predominantly Presbyterian, groups then emigrated in the 18th century to America, where they acquired the name "Scotch-Irish."  For the purposes of the interview, not all of your ancestors need to be Scotch-Irish; the important factor is that you identify yourself as Scotch-Irish.  If you would be interested in participating in this interview, or if you have any questions, please contact:  Karen Harvey.

First Families of Pennsylvania. First Families of Pennsylvania is open to those who can prove their descent from an ancestor who resided in what is now Pennsylvania during the following time periods:

  • Pennsylvania Proud – 1866-1900
Applications are due by November 30 of each year. New members are inducted at the GSP Annual Meeting held in the spring of each year. More information about Pennsylvania First Families is available at: http://www.genpa.org/FirstFamPA.html.
